A large plume of smog has left Ireland among some of the worst affected countries and countries around the world for ozone depletion, with the health risks seen highest in people who live in areas with an extensive network of air quality monitors.

The Health Department and public health authorities from Northern Ireland, with assistance from health centres in Dublin, said that in the past nine days, there have been five major incidents of severe acute respiratory illness.
In total, four people were admitted to hospital with chest and lung problems, eight people were diagnosed with heart disease, one with asthma and 16 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
They include a man who suffered a seizure and heart problems for several days following the heavy smog, while in a car accident involving a car full of elderly residents in the area.
